The desert steppe or semi desert is characterized by dry climate with mean annual precipitation of 100 - 125 mm. Vegetation is dominated by low grasses and shrubs such as Cleistogenes songorica, Allium polyrhizum and Stipa gobica.

Since the middle of the 19th century, wild ass have been distributed in Dsungarian, Trans-Altai Gobi, Great Lakes Basin, Valley of Gobi Lakes, east and middle Gobi of Mongolia, and even in the steppes of Eastern Mongolia.
Kulan with foal
The Altai argali (O.a. ammon) occur along the whole Mongol-Altai chain, along the main ridge of Khangai chain, Khan Khokhii range, and in western Khovsgol mountains.
Gobi argali (O.a. darwini). can be found along the whole Gobi-Altai range, Trans-Altai gobi and in several isolated ranges in Central Mongolia.
