About

Large herbivores play an important role in many ecosystem processes, therefore managing their numbers and distribution can alter the ecological functioning of the ecosystem in which they occur. ‏They are commonly recognised as ‘keystone’ species through their role as ecosystem-engineer herbivores and are good candidates as ecological indicators of ecosystem management. Large herbivores are also valuable from economic, recreational, aesthetic, and educational point of view and can be applied as a tool for biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Mahmoud-Reza Hemami is PhD in conservation Ecology from University of East Anglia, England, member of Conservation Breeding Specialist Group, SSC, IUCN, since 1994 and member of Antelope Specialist Group, SSC, IUCN, since 2002. He is also member of a few Iranian environmental NGOs. He studied Iranian gazelles, wild sheep, wild goat plus roe deer and muntjac (In England) and currently he is involved in a study on Asiatic wild ass.
