Nature Needs Half

“Large, interconnected landscapes are essential for functional and healthy ecosystems. This ecological principle is at the core of the Nature Needs Half vision and well articulated through the work of the Large Herbivore Network. LHNet’s work to conserve and restore large herbivores and their landscapes is an outstanding example of how the global Nature Needs Half vision can be applied locally to benefit landscapes and communities”, Emily Loose, Director of Communications.

“Today about 10% of the land surface is protected on paper. Even if this is rigorously conserved, this amount is not enough to save more than a modest fraction of wild species…Eventually, and the sooner the better, a higher goal can and should be set. ….let me suggest 50%. Half the world for humanity, half for the rest of life, to create a planet both self-sustaining and pleasant.” E.O. Wilson, The Future of Life, Knopf, 2002

Protecting and interconnecting at least half of the planet, land and water, to support all life on earth is no small vision. Multimedia photojournalist Morgan Heim dives into what this bold, new conservation vision means with an inspiring combination of stunning photographs and powerful interviews.

Nature Needs Half™ for the large herbivores:
What is wild nature, wilderness without the large herbivores? A long, long time ago nature was not managed by man. The whole complex of biotic and a-biotic factors guaranteed huge biodiversity. The large herbivores: wild cattle, horses, bison, deer, wild sheep and goats, together with the beaver - and don’t forget the wild boar “ploughing and scavenging” - freely roamed the Eurasian continent. They lived together with predators and many other species, possibly in unexpected huge numbers. Today, nature management is often the mimicking of former agricultural techniques, such as mowing, cutting etc and in the long term is not sustainable to protect wildlife habitats. Therefore we should give more room to the natural processes, and thus room for one of the most important ecological steering factors: the wild herbivores, including the beaver and wild boar. Making room for these exciting and provocative challenges– vast landscapes, strong ecosystems is an important part of Nature Needs Half.

European Wildlife

European Wildlife

European Wildlife is a Pan-European non-profit organization dedicated to nature preservation and environmental protection. Their key objective is to conserve biological diversity and to reduce the impact of climatic changes on nature and humankind. They will create a network of non-state nature reserves aimed at helping endangered species of plants and animals to survive or to return to areas where, in the past, they were exterminated.

As a part of our effort there are two big projects:

The European Center of Biodiversity, a reserve emerging on the border of three states in Central Europe which should become something like a ‘Noahs Ark‘ for the majority of European species

The regeneration of natural forests in the Mediterranean – this should significantly reduce the impact of climatic changes in the countries of Southern Europe and even the whole continent of Europe.

Ark Nature

Mission

Ark Nature, as an innovative nature organisation, would like to show how societal changes invariably lead to new chances for nature and the landscape. We encourage people to seize these opportunities in the conviction that more room for nature in our thoughts and actions will improve the quality of life, for men and for nature.

Vision

Robust, spontaneous nature is essential for plants and animals, but also for the economy and all people's well-being: green, resources and happiness!

Spontaneous nature

Vast robust and dynamic nature areas where natural processes can go their own sweet way: this is what we of ARK stand for. It results in an unprecedented richness in landscapes and the accompanying flora and fauna. If interconnected, the new nature areas will create the necessary network for plants and animals to move on.

Green gold

It is essential that nature is socially and economically embedded. Large nature areas can generate billions in income and offer prospects for spatial development. Projects such as mineral extraction, water management, urban development and health care will be better off with nature development.

Recreation, tourism and a favourable climate for establishing businesses and institutions will bring strong local economies.

Pleasure and health

Authentic nature is exciting. It offers plenty of prospects for enjoyable activities and contributes to good health. Millions of people live and work or recreate in and around nature areas and are aware of the economic and societal value of nature. The development of spontaneous, accessible nature will enhance the quality of life for many of us, especially close by urban areas.

Sponsors

Sponsors that made the difference so far

The Dutch ministery of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality supported the network over many years by covering the salary of its director. This continues until the 1st of July 2011. In December 2009, respectively February 2010 we received warmly welcomed donations from the Prince Bernard Foundation for Nature and WWF, the Netherlands, especially for communication leading to better opportunities for fundraising. With the Zoo in Amsterdam, Artis, LHNet has a long lasting cooperation in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, especially regarding the European bison. Furthermore Veerkracht allround communications helped us designing a professional look of our communication materials. With their help it was possible to relaunch LHNet to become a professional organisation.

Sponsors needed to make the difference in future

If you are interested in a corporate sponsorship or another form of partnership, please contact us with your ideas. You are most welcome to discuss possibilities that both parties can benefit from!

PanParks

PanParks

Wilderness in Europe is a concept many do not recognise - yet, there is still wilderness throughout Europe. It survives in virgin forests, along rivers, marshlands, in high mountains or caves, and under the sea. However, compact, un-fragmented and well-managed wilderness areas are very scarce in Europe. Wilderness protection is not considered a priority by the public, politicians and even some conservationists. We are constantly losing the last fragments of our European Wilderness Heritage. The remaining natural forests are penetrated by sanitary logging operations, remote mountains echo with the roar of tractors and bulldozers, and new roads crisscross the last undisturbed mountain valleys in Europe. The word 'wilderness' has many definitions; it often refers to 'virgin' areas, a natural environment that has not been significantly modified by human activity. These are core areas for nature. Wilderness areas are places where natural processes and wildlife thrive and major human interference is avoided.

PAN Parks, the European wilderness protection organization, works for the protection, greater understanding and appreciation of Europe’s wilderness areas.

protects the natural habitats and fragile ecosystems so vital to the future of Europe’s wilderness,

advocates, using the PAN Parks Certification to ensure these wilderness areas are safeguarded, enhanced and appreciated,

builds collaborative partnerships amongst individuals and organizations who, together, can protect wilderness by sharing knowledge and growing understanding,

promotes sustainable, responsible tourism to foster love, respect and pride for Europe’s wilderness.
