„Forgotten Species“ - Mongolian Gazelle
Once roaming the steppes of Mongolia and neighbouring areas of China and Russia, the Mongolian Gazelle declined from 13 million in early 1900s to around 0.5 million in year 2000 due to unsustainable harvesting and competition with livestock. LHF concentrated its efforts in supporting the come-back of the species in the Daurian steppes in Russia. Through a combination of research, increasing the public awareness, management efforts, and working with faith and political communities across the border in Mongolia, the species has returned and increased from less than 100 animals in early 2000s to close 1,000 in 2008.
