Large herbivores play a key role in ecological processes and ecosystems. But herbivores need large areas if they are to survive, and these can sometimes be close to human settlements. In order to maintain and restore viable populations of large herbivores in Eurasia (see working area LHNet), the restoration of vast landscapes is needed.
Nowadays there are a lot of small, fragmented areas. This causes loss of genetic diversity, which is crucial for the adaptability of populations and their survival. Genetic information that is lost cannot be retrieved.
The most important regions and hotspots for large herbivores in Eurasia were identified in 2000, see Regions - hotspots. This is a good start, but not enough to reach our goals. Further identification of suitable areas is needed.
Many advantages are gained by creating more space for nature, because restoring places where natural processes can take place, like vast landscapes and wilderness or wild nature areas, is not only important for wildlife. People can also benefit from this in the form of recreation, recuperation, economic benefits and building a legacy for future generations.
