Projects and LHNet

LHNet aims to bring people and institutions together, to cooperate in the field of large herbivore conservation. Much of the work of the Large Herbivore Network has to do with projects in the wider field of large herbivore conservation and restoration, including their ecosystems. The proposed projects have been linked to our species and the countries where they occur. However,  LHNet is not a project organization.

LHNet project approach

The project approach is often the logical vehicle to arrange for cooperation, co-funding and synergy to include all aspects of conservation, while not forgetting the ‘human dimension’. LHNet applies a seed-money strategy, using small monies to facilitate cooperation and the initiation of projects. Once things have been set in motion and a solid base for a successful cooperation for field projects is created, LHNet will facilitate in seeking active support from third parties. This may be co-funding, structural support, etc. from WWF other NGO networks and GOs, international conventions and international bodies such as EU, GEF and UN agencies.

Project history

Since 1998, the Large Herbivore Network has initiated, started or supported over 40 projects throughout the geographical range of LHF, in cooperation with a large number of partners. A number of these LHF-initiated projects have been handed over successfully for structural continuation. Examples include: Mongolian gazelle (MN); UNEP, Mongolian saiga; MAVA foundation/WWF MN, Bukhara deer; WWF/ Uzbek Government, saiga (RU/CA); many international NGO/GO bodies, including Bonn Convention + CITES, European bison; broadening cooperation NGO/GO, Bern Convention, EU.
