- LHF assisted the IUCN/SSC Bison Specialist Group to finalize in 2004 a Species Action Plan, which now serves a reference and guiding document for the conservation of the European Bison across its entire range.
- During 1999-2007 LHF organized the transport and re-introduction of 69 animals into suitable areas in Latvia, Slovakia, Poland and Russia.
- Upon initiative of LHF, the European Union decided in 2004 to incorporate the European Bison into two annexes of the EU Habitats Directive obliging its Member States to designate “special areas of conservation” for the species as well as providing “strict protection”.
- Through interventions at the political level using the European Commission and the Bern Convention, LHF prevented the killing of the only remaining, free-living population of the European Bison in Lithuania (~ 70 animals).
- In 2007 LHF made a presentation on the status and implementation of the IUCN/SSC 'Species Action Plan for European Bison', to the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention/ COE in Strasbourg. LHF, now LHNet is considered by the COE and Bern Convention parties, to be the monitoring agency for the SAP on bison.
