The Mongolian desert is extremely dry with mean annual precipitation lower than 100mm. Springs and other water sources are very rare. Climate is strongly continental and extremely arid. Vegetation is sparse. The desert has extremely unique formations of changing contrasts like hills, hillocks, rolling heaths and sand dunes.

Very rare
The wild Bactrian camel is the characteristic large herbivore in the desert. It is endemic for Central Asia and globally threatened. Wild camels have been very widely distributed in Central Asia’s desert, not only in Mongolia and China but also in Khazakstan.
