Habitat description

The Altai habitat is characterized by forests, mountainous steppes and alpine mountainous belt.

Background information

The Altai mountains are located in Russia and partly in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Altai has a nature reserve that was established in 1932. The Altai is neighboring the Mongolian Altai, Mongolia´s high mountain habitat.

Threats

  • Both, poaching and domestic livestock (competition and disturbance, especially winter cattle grazing) are the main threats to the Altai argalis continued survival.
  • Heavy hunting of these sheep is also reported when they cross into Mongolia. A recent report indicates that licences to shoot this argali are being sold at US $ 30,000 each.
  • Illegal hunting is largely responsible for the dramatic decline in musk deer populations this century.
