Symposium in London, 17 and 18 November 2011

The Zoological Society of London is hosting the Symposium Antelope Conservation in the 21st century: from diagnosis to action.

The drastic decline in wildlife populations since 1970 has hit antelopes particularly severely with more than a quarter of species now threatened by extinction. However, antelopes have received far less conservation attention than many of their mammalian relatives in spite of providing some of the most fascinating wildlife spectacles on earth. Thus in the absence of immediate action, several species are in imminent danger of joining the scimitar-horned oryx as recent extinctions in the wild.

This meeting aims to clarify current trends in global antelope biodiversity, understand what drives the major threat processes and, on this basis, highlight conservation priorities, taking into account both biological and socioeconomic aspects because antelopes demonstrate striking variation in morphology, ecology and behaviour, they are exposed to a wide range of the threats facing biodiversity today. In this way, the focus on antelopes provides a prism through which general insights into the principles governing conservation threats and their mitigation can be achieved.

The topics addressed by world leading experts in antelope conservation include:

how to turn friendly land use in a world of environmental change, how antelope-livestock interactions affect resource competition and disease transmission,
how to render bushmeat hunting sustainable, and the usefulness of sport hunting, game ranching and reintroductions as tools in conservation.

The symposium is organised by Jakob Bro-Jørgensen Group) and David Mallon (Manchester Metropolitan University/IUCN Antelope Specialist Group, co-chair).

The Arctic Ungulate Conference (AUC) is an international conference held every four years. Yellowknife will be your host for the next AUC in August 2011. The theme of the conference – Challenges of Managing Northern Ungulates – will address the difficulties of managing ungulate populations that are faced with the unpredictable effects of climate change and an ever-increasing human presence on the land. The conference will also focus on the challenges associated with developing recovery actions for declining caribou and reindeer populations that are an integral part of Aboriginal cultures and ways of life. Network meeting for the Russian region and species

On 10 and 11 of May 2011 the LHNet-team organized a regional and focussed network meeting in Moscow, combined with a field visit to two potential areas for free roaming European bison.

Identification of challenging areas and planning of the activities of LHNet in Russia for 2011 - 2013 for:

European bison
Kulan
Reindeer
Bukhara deer
Saiga antelope

The objectives of the meeting

Review the role of LHNet for the large herbivores in Russia and Central Asia for the period 2011 – 2013
Review the status of selected species
Agreement on priorities, leading to effective projects
Establish concrete activities

In more detail:

To discuss the content / updates of the webpages on species, regarding Russia and Central Asia (European bison, Reindeer, Kulan, Bukhara deer, Saiga, depending of the special niche LHNet can develop)
To work-out our thoughts, dreams, wishes on the needed long term results (a “sketch” what the situation should be in let’s say in >25 years)
To decide what the steps should be in the coming 1 - 3 – 5 years (and the steps beyond) to make a start for this long term “journey’
To work out these steps in concrete project proposals (output –leading to future results) to present to potential sponsors (accompanied by publicity and communication)
To identify partners to make this true (both from the ecological field, and many other – hopefully unexpected and creative fields)
To identify the potential sponsors, and the best way to approach them.

Expected results

Field visits to the potential areas for European bison: Orel-Bryansk (450 km SW of Moscow) and Vologda (500 km NE of Moscow and 600 km east of St Petersburg)
Identification and agreement on priorities for selected species
Project concepts for selected species
Recommendations for fundraising
Identification of experts ready to support in LHNet activities in Russia and Central Asia and agreement on tasks
Workable ideas on fundraising
Identification of new experts on the species and landscapes

3 - 8 May: field visits to Orel-Bryansk and Vologda region
10 and 11 May: meetings at WWF-Russia, Moscow office
12 May: meeting with staff and students at the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Natuurlijke begrazing in de praktijk, halfwilde kuddes en natuurresultaten

15, 16 & 27 september, 7 oktober & 4 november 2011

Begrazing van natuurterreinen heeft een hoge vlucht genomen in Nederland. Halfwilde runderen en paarden begrazen zo'n 70.000 hectare natuurgebied.De manier waarop beheerders begrazing toepassen verschilt van gebied tot gebied. Van grazers als wandelende maaimachines tot grazers als (bijna) wilde dieren. Free Nature organiseert een vijfdaagse cursus voor een ieder die betrokken is bij begrazing in natuurgebieden.
